Over 150 farmer cooperative leaders from across the country came to our nation’s capital last week to attend NCFC’s 2011 Washington Conference. Attendees heard from key decision makers in Congress, experts from the public policy community, and members of the media; in addition, they took the message of cooperatives directly to Capitol Hill and the Administration in dozens of meetings over the course of the Conference.

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, was the keynote speaker of the Conference, and urged those in agriculture to take an active part as Congress prepares to write the next farm bill. In particular, she noted the challenge of writing a farm bill when efforts to cut the federal budget deficit mean that her committee will be writing a bill with a much smaller budget baseline.

Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and Representative Dan Lungren (R-Calif.), a member active on agricultural immigration issues, also spoke last week. Attendees also heard from former member of Congress Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin and former Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman.

The Washington Conference provides NCFC members with a prime opportunity to become part of the effort to put the farmer face on co-ops for those in Washington. Please mark your calendars now f0r next year’s event, which will be held June 20-22, 2012.
