NCFC Applauds Passage of Food Uniformity Bill in House Print E-mail

Washington, DC &ndasy; The National Council of Farmer Cooperatives (NCFC) today applauded yesterday’s House passage of the National Uniformity for Food Act (HR 4167) by a vote of 283-139.

The legislation amends the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act in the areas of food safety tolerance setting and warning labeling, taking a measured, science based approach to achieve national uniformity. It provides for orderly review and harmonization of existing state food safety laws and warnings as they relate to Federal law. No existing state labeling law would be preempted without such review. NCFC, as part of a broad based coalition of food and agriculture groups, strongly supports HR 4167.

"This legislation is extremely important for producers, consumers, and the entire food and agriculture industry," said NCFC President Jean-Mari Peltier. "It makes no sense to have a patchwork quilt of regulations resulting in a multitude of different state regulations and standards for identical products."

The bill was introduced by Representatives Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) and Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) The legislation now goes to the Senate for consideration.
